I’ve been looking for a popular romantic Japanese anime, but I haven’t really found a good one. I was looking for a movie I can enjoy during the last days of the pandemic and that was when I found the world wide famous Ōkami Shōjo to Kuro Ōji or Wolf Girl and Black Prince in English. Yes, you guessed it right, this is a very old topic and almost everything has been told when it comes to love between teenagers, but I still found this anime very interesting to watch and I learned a lot of new Japanese expressions from this masterpiece. Let’s see what the Wolf Girl and Black Prince brings us!
Ōkami Shōjo to Kuro Ōji or my favourite romantic anime of this year
If you are learning Japanese and you’re already know how to read Japanese characters you can read the title in Japanese: オオカミ少女と黒王子. If not, I recommend you checking out my hiragana test on this site and this will help you a lot in learning the basics of Japanese.
The plot starts with a very old topic, but then the love-story cliche gets a Japanese feel to it and it turns out to be a pretty interesting story. We’re all teenagers or at least we were young a few years ago and we all know what we expected from life. We wanted love. We were looking for the one and we kept asking the question whether the one exists. The protagonist of Ōkami Shōjo to Kuro Ōji, 篠原エリカ or Erica Shinohara had similar expectations and she had been dreaming of that blond prince on white horse just as any of us had been doing it, up until the point when we actually met him (or her).
Erica is a first year student in a Japanese highschool and she is dreaming of a new lover, but she is unable to figure out the necessary steps she would have to take in order to bring this so-called love closer to herself. So Erica is dreaming just as we were have been dreaming, but the love doesn’t seem to appear to her in reality. Her dream is to have a boyfriend, similar to a pussycat, that can be pulled out of her wardrobe whenever she needs him. So you know without all the nuisances boyfriends represent. How good it would be to have some kind of boyfriend rental service. So she wants to have a boyfriend who is smart, good looking, kind and available whenever she needs him. What an idealistic dream, right? She would turn this virtual boyfriend off in case she had enough of him, just like an obedient TV. Eventually she finds his boy. His name is 佐田恭也 or Kyōya Sata in English.
Ōkami Shōjo to Kuro Ōji is a romantic anime, based on a manga, that was published between 2011 and 2016 in Japan. This masterpiece presents us a very typical Japanese man, with peculiarities that Erica has never ever dreamed of. The guy lives an isolated life, he is not too social and already has his eccentricities. He has his own sense of values and treats Erica in a pretty rough way. He is not necessarily impolite or rude to her, but he doesn’t show too much emotion to this cute little schoolgirl. Erica cannot but fall in love. This shouldn’t come as a surprise, because Sata is not only attractive, but the inscrutability of his character challenges the girl to show more emotions towards him. Whether this leads to a happy ending is a good question. No matter what, Erica is growing up and reality hits her with no mercy. Was this really what she expected from love and her prince? Well reality and imagination doesn’t always coincide, do they?
We cannot but feel compassion when watching her suffer. This is the concommitant side effect of true love and there is not much she can do about it, but let’s not blame her because she is just following her heart and her innocent feelings. Ōkami Shōjo to Kuro Ōji brings us this emotional rollercoaster, and we can witness the hardship experienced by Erica due to this unrequited love. Sata’s heart doesn’t seem to warm up and Erica is really doing her best to ignite at least some kind of fire in this Japanese schoolboy. There is one scene in the anime in which Sata calls Erica his dog. Poor girl...
Sata is sceptical about Erica’s love and he doesn’t seem to believe her feelings. Erica suffers a lot because of this and she endeavours even further to conquer Sata’s heart. She sacrifices a lot in order to bring some romanticism into this teenager love. Well, we all know these relationships. Sometimes girls contribute more to the relationship, but sometimes guys do more in order to keep the ties alive. If you want to enjoy some Japanese romance, learn some Japanese and educate yourself on how Japanese teenagers fall in love, Ōkami Shōjo to Kuro Ōji is an excellent choice.
As the narrative evolves, well-known elements make the story more interesting and it’s almost impossible to pause the video and go to the toilet. Sata’s behaviour becomes suspicious and rumours of him wooing other girls arise. These complicate the proceedings even further and the whole anime becomes a true love story. Nevertheless, Erica endures the pain and she keeps on working on her first relationship. She is indeed very strong and has an unrelenting character. Even though she experiences emotional suffering several times she doesn’t give and progresses towards her goal.
This is what you can expect from Ōkami Shōjo to Kuro Ōji in a few words. If you want to learn more Japanese, have some insight into Japanese school life and listen to some nice Japanese anime songs, this anime is for you. Currently, the Japanese version of the anime is available on Youtube with Vietnamese subtitles, but I’m sure if you search for it on the Internet you’ll find English subtitles as well. Enjoy the anime!
